Wendell Slater Hodges
Born: 07/29/1896 Elizabeth J Hodges is buried with her adopted son Wendell. She was the wife of G M Hodges of Lane Co, OR. Wendell was born at home on Mill St. in Portland, Multnomah Co, OR on July 29, 1896 to Hannah Matilda Norcross Slater and George Benjamin Slater. His name at birth was Willamette Wendell Slater. His mother Hannah was born in the Forest Grove/Greenville area of Washington Co, OR Sept 1866. She died in April of 1901 and is buried at Lone Fir Cemetery. She was the daughter of L M Norcross b. 1825 in ME, and Margaret J McNamar b. 1846 in IA. His father George B was born Jan 1857 in Prairieville, Barry Co, MI to George Leonard Slater b. 1829 in MI and Jane E Barber b. 1835. George B was a grandson of the infamous Baptist Missionary Rev Leonard Slater of the same area. George B died at the Multnomah Co poor farm and is also buried at Lone Fir Cemetery. Wendall was left orphaned with three siblings. Sister Beatrice Florence b. 4-2-1891, Eureka, Humbolt Co, CA and d. 3-10-1959 LA, LA Co, CA. She married Rupert Percy Snoke 12-17-1913 in Portland. They moved to CA about 1918. Both are interred at Forest Lawn, Glendale, LA Co, CA. The other siblings were George C {Clinton?} b. 9-15-1893 Eureka CA and Grace M b. may 1000 Portland OR. The four children were placed with Mary M Norcross McLean, an aunt of their mother, in May 1901 when their father became ill shortly after their mother had died.
In July 1901 Wendell was adopted by G M and E J Hodges and his name legally changed to Wendell Slater Hodges. George C and Beatrice were still with their aunt in the census of 1910, the fate of Grace is unknown. Wendell never married and at the time of his death was a laborer. Cause of death was suicide by hanging, in his Portland home.
