In 1909 the Dempseys lived in rural Cecil, Oregon. They traveled to Portland to visit their daughter and son-in-law in late July of that year. Thelma became very ill the day after her third birthday. Dr. Canfield attended her until her death on August 3^rd. She died of cholera morbis, which is now thought to be appendicitis. The other children were told she died from eating green apples.

Services were held at the M E Church on the corner of East 10^th and Riggen Streets in Portland. Her funeral cost $33.00. She was buried at Columbian Cemetery. A wooden cross marked her grave. The exact site has never been found.
