Families of Historic Columbian Cemetery

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Here are some questions and answers about the cemetery. If you have a question not listed here, please feel free to email us at families@fohcc.org and we'll do our best to assist you.

We will be adding more Q&A's as they come up.

Q. Who owns Columbian Cemetery?

A. It's owned by the families of those who are buried at the cemetery. And that is why it's up to all of us to take care of it (please see our Future Projects and Donations page to see how you can help).

Q. Who is the current groundskeeper for the cemetery?

A. We have no "official" groundskeeper at the moment, and we're currently looking for someone who can volunteer their time. If you're interested, please contact us. Also, any clean-up assistance, small or large, would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Q. How can I found out about a specific plot or plots, or if my relative is buried in this cemetery?

A. If you have questions about a specific plot or plots, please contact us and we'll send you the appropriate contact information. We may also be able to help you with research at no charge if you have one or more family members buried at Columbian.

Note: more complete records will be put up on the site as soon as possible. If you believe your relative is buried in Columbian but don't see their name on the site, please know we have much more to go up as time (and health issues of the person who runs the site) permits. Contact us, we may be able to give you more information not already up on the site.

Q. How many people are interred at the cemetery?

A. Approximately 5000.

Q. Where is the cemetery located?

A. Its street address is 1151 N Columbian Blvd, Portland, Oregon. Geographically, it's in north Portland, in the St. Johns/Kenton area, in Multnomah County.

A. For a map to the cemetery, weather info, and a live street cam of the area, please see our Maps, Weather, and Other Info page.

Q. What is the exact name of the cemetery? Has it been known by other names?

A. It's name is Historic Columbian Cemetery (note the 'n' at the end of Columbian). It's also been known as the Love Cemetery, Columbia Cemetery, and Columbia-Kenton. It is not to be confused with the Columbia Masonic, which is at NE 99th and NE Sandy Blvd in Portland.

Q. When was the cemetery established?

A. The offical date on the gate is 1857, but it was a private cemetery before that, founded by Capt. Lewis Love as a Pioneer cemetery.

People will not look forward to posterity,
who never look backwards to their ancestors.
