OLD ENTRIES:

I am Kyle's 'MOM'. When he made the discovery last summer that there was a cemetery 'down there', we were stuck in a traffic jam on I-5, headed to Washington. He begged me to take him there one day, so we went down and took a look. Kyle instantly knew that this was to become his Eagle Scout project. As he dove into the process of finding information about the cemetery, we were pleased to discover that it was where James John lies in rest; JJ has been a fondness within my family over the years, to the point that my step-father, David Swart, served as Grand Marshall for the St. John's Parade one year, in complete character as James John. As Kyle continued his search, he found the 'caretaker' of the lot (and was so discouraged to learn that no City or County aid comes in!), and continued his progress from there. Mr. Roth was very helpful in working with Kyle to get some of the cemetery cleaned up. Kyle was able to paint the front gate and the 'cottage'; trim around many, many, markers; litter patrol the entire lot (8 or 9 large bags of trash!); cut down blackberry bushes and brambles, and trim way back the shrubs in the main childrens' area. At the end of the second day, we discovered another childrens' area, off to the left as you enter the lot, under a large spruce tree. My daughter and I had some fun 'discovering' hidden (overgrown) markers, and will be back to dig out some more. As it rained off and on on the 17th, we will back, probably next week, to finish painting the front gate. Anyway, I'm very proud of Kyle for finding, choosing, and researching such a very worthwhile project. We had no idea it would have the impact that it already has; Kyle has been overwhelmed by the responses he has received. Thank you to all who have contacted him, and to all who make this website possible, and to those who also volunteer their time to make this location a nicer place to visit.

You can't imagine my delight upon arriving at the CC on saturday to find Kyle and his merry band working away! I nearly cried to see the little cottage without any graffiti! Stay tuned, Kyle, you will see some photos of your work here. I went to the cemetery to meet with Margene, ggg grandaughter of Cpt Lewis Love, pioneer to our area. A very delightful lady, I surely enjoyed our visit and tour. Hope we can get gg grandpa Love's stone up soon, and the graffiti from the wall behind ggg grandpa Love. See you saturday! Katie

I wanted to say that before I saw this website I didnt know that so many people still cared about the cemetery. I also am doing my eagle project there,On May10 and 17th.On the 10th we did alot of triming and weed eating and also painted the front gate and maintenance building. We just found out my greatgrandfather is buried here. It's awesome (sounds weird) to look at the pictures of the cemetary. I feel I'm closer just seeing those. I'm hoping you can give me some additional info.

I could not see Dessie nor Charles Tuttles' name on your list. Dessie is right near the dilapidated little house to the left of the road. Her headstone says Jessie Ione Tuttle. I once sent a check to a fella who was attending the place with a request to have her headstone corrected. I haven't been to see if it was done...Perhaps he had no time for it. Along the back fence is Baby Tuttle who is my kin and I have Aunties and uncles not on your list. Will continue to watch for you are doing a good thing here and this is a most time consuming job. My greatgrandmother Dessie Ione (Landerking) Tuttle (headstone says Jessie) is buried at your lovely cemetery and I visit everytime I fly into Oregon. My Great Grandfather Charles Henry Tuttle is there. They have a child there, a few grandchildren, one being Dorothy Tuttle born to Normn an Fern Tuttle who died on Christmas Day many years ago. I am seeking her burial site so I can have a headstone placed. I also have aunts and uncles buried in this cemetery. A plat map would be helpful. I can provide biographys for a couple of the people as I knew them well. I would love to help in some way if someone would contact me and tell me how to go about it. Any information anyone wishes that I can provide is here for the asking and anyone with anything to add to my family search is welcome. Thank yu, Sandee

Congraulations for your outstanding work! It's great to see photos of Columbian cemetery on the web. So many of the people laid to rest here made Portland the great city it is. Great service and wish we had others like you. I do the research for folks wishing toshing to get obituaries from the Oregonian and Portland Times. Often I have to just walk the Columbia Cemetery, grave by grave to take pictures. I have several and will be happy to share with folks. Most of the deceased lived in the St. Johns area of Portland and many are related to each other. Thank you for your great work. Lovely site.

I am searching for a relative that was buried at Columbian Cemetery. I have been unable to find the grave site. His name was Charles Johnson. According to his granddaugter, the grave is near a children's plot located in the cemetery. Any help would be appreciated. I would be happy to volunteer to assist in clean-up, etc. Thanks Richard

You have done a great job. I walked through this very interesting cemetery 25 years ago but wasn't into genealogy yet. Even then I was impressed that some of the people buried here were Pioneers from the 1840s. Now I find it really fascinating. Keep up the good work!

Hooray! Been looking for a listing of this cemetery for many years. Extremely greatful. My dear grandmother Jennie A. Williams is here, as is her mother Sophia M. C. Tufts. Also here somewhere is James Hamilton Tufts, Frank Clark Tufts and an infant Alice Williams. As a little girl my grandmother would take me on the long busride from NW Portland to the cemetery to put iris on her mother's grave. I'm sooo glad a real effort is being put into the records.
