Families of Historic Columbian Cemetery

I-5 Expansion Issues

We have received word the Oregon and Washington Departments of Transportation are looking at expanding I-5, which runs near and over the cemetery, and putting in more off-ramps. They are considering taking part of the cemetery's land to do so, which would be a terrible, terrible thing. We are trying to obtain more information, and to do what we can to try to prevent this from happening. We don't have much time -- this is to be decided in a few months.

Please, if you have an interest in the cemetery, join our mailing list. It is very important something be done to help the cemetery now. We need your help... we can't do it alone.

Update: May, 2008: Look for more information being posted soon, but if you've visited the cemetery recently, you'll noticed the new fence, gates, arch, and lighting, which is the result of cooperation with ODOT and the cemetery. The ODOT project is running alongside the cemetery, and not through it. OODOT will be replacing the fence along the freeway side with a new 6 foot fence. Other fences in the back part of the cemetery have either been replaced or reinforced.

Update - June 11, 2004: Please see the what's new page to get info on the latest ODOT meeting on June 16th.

Update - March 19, 2004: Please see the what's new page for our summary of our meeting with ODOT regarding the proposed I-5 expansion.

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) sent us two PDF files regarding the I-5 expansion project.

The above files seem to indicate they don't plan to expand on or over the cemetery, but other maps, etc., on their site seem to indicate otherwise. What will happen remains very much up in the air.

"In all of us there is a hunger, marrow-deep, to know our heritage - to know who we are and where we have come from. Without this enriching knowledge, there is a hollow yearning. No matter what our attainments in life, there is still a vacuum. An emptiness. And the most disquieting loneliness."
Alex Haley
